CPA- An Overview

The Cost per Action or more commonly known as the CPA is a form of the internet marketing. In this form of marketing a product or service is advertised on a website with a small description and a URL guiding to the advertising page. The fee of this form of advertising is determined by the specific ‘actions’ of the user. For example the publisher may charge the advertiser when a user fills out a form at his website. This filling out of the form could be for registering at the side, filling out a questionnaire, applying for site member ship, ordering a product or service and so on. This fee system also ensures that the advertiser will not be charged if a user is just viewing the advertising page. This form of price structure is also called ‘Cost per Acquisition’.
The CPA has proven it self to be extremely beneficial for the owner of the product or service. He does not have to pay if the user is not taking any action on his advertising page and thus the investment profit ratio remains very good.
When the CPA was introduced it raised serious concerns for the publishers. They used to argue that what is their fault if the user is not taking an action on the advertising page; the space for their webpage is constantly being used. They further argued that the user may not take action on a page because either the product or the service is not of good quality or the promotion content is not good enough.
This problem was solved by introducing standardized benchmarking. The benchmarking ensured that the advertisement is thoroughly tried and tasted on several variant small samples of audience. The advertiser will bear the cost of ‘testing’ and the publisher will take the advertisement only if it has proven itself in the benchmarking phase.
